Water Main Replacement on Thomas Avenue to Begin this Week, Continue Through Mid-July

This week, City of Fayetteville contractors will begin working to replace a water main along Thomas Avenue from W. Maple Street to W. Hotz Drive.  The project includes installation of approximately 1,980 linear feet of a 12-inch water main west of Razorback Road/Highway 112 underneath Thomas Avenue. The work is expected to take ten weeks to complete.

The University of Arkansas will also be working on the project, building curb and gutter stormwater improvements and a sidewalk. Many utility companies (cable, telephone, gas and electric) also work on these infrastructure projects. The City of Fayetteville's Transportation Services Division will overlay the roadway. Drivers and residents are advised to be watchful for workers and equipment in the area and to expect detours and periodic road closures. Traffic delays can be expected in this area and alternate routes are encouraged.

Site preparation and set-up begin this week.  Concrete cutting is scheduled to begin the week of May 6, and pipe installation begins the week of May 20, to continue through mid-July.  Residents should be aware that weather may delay project timelines. Every effort is made to coordinate projects for least disruption to customers.

This construction is part of the final phase of a project to remove water mains from the Razorback Road/Highway 112 area near Razorback Stadium. Following the installation of this 12-inch main on Thomas Ave., crews will move on to replace 8-inch pipes along S. Sang Avenue from Old Farmington Road to Mitchell Drive; and then along Pleasant Woods Drive. The full project is expected to take six months to complete.

These projects are funded through the Water System Rehabilitation/Replacement Project Budget of the Water and Sewer Fund. For more information about upcoming water and sewer capital improvements projects, visit the City of Fayetteville’s web page.
